I ate McDonalds with them on a bench at the Manassas battlefield this morning, and had plenty of time to wonder about their adorable little lives -- do they eat? Do they just need to molt and climb a tree and that's it, or do they still need to mate and make more little cicadas? Of course the answers are a few clicks away.

Well, the females sing a song to attract a mate, and after the female has mated, she climbs a tree and lays her hundreds of eggs in the tree's branches. Does this mean that the cicadas I saw climbing had already mated and were about their life's work? Maybe so. In most cases, the cidadas are useful to the trees and plants around them, becuase the little nymphs aererate the soil.

Cicadas eat a little nectar while they're alive, and can live for 4-6 weeks. They don't bite or sting at all. One was agreeable to climbing on my finger and up my arm, so I know the reason they can walk straight up tree trunks is because their feet are like little mountain-climbing crampons.

We stayed part in the main portion of Venice, and part on the Venetian island of Lido, which is unique among the Venetian islands for having beaches, a proper grocery store, and also cars and bicycles. We rented bikes and rode to the water taxi in the morning, then we'd ride back through the chill, damp evening to our hotel and it's cozy, 3-star restaurant.

Drew's favorite (and only meal) was the Spaghetti al Ragu, which he said was, "So scrumptios, and meaty, and delicious!" This recepie is modeled after the sauce we had there, which was notable to me for its simplicity (no big chunks of vegetables or anything, and although it tasted very meaty, it wasn't overloaded) and is forever known simply as "Scrumptios Meaty"

"Scrumptios Meaty" Spaghetti Sauce

Pasta to serve four

1T Canola or other cooking oil

1/4 lb. of ground beef

2 cloves garlic, chopped small

2T olive oil

1, 14.5 oz. can of crushed tomatos (I like plain but sometimes accidentally buy some already salted or with basil or something and that's OK, too, just adjust the salt and basil in the recepie accordingly).

1t of dry basil or 2t fresh, chopped up

1/4t salt (more to taste)

1/4t pepper (more to taste)

1/2t brown sugar

Get some water boiling in a pot and cook the pasta as you're making the sauce.

Warm the canola oil in a skillet (you can go without the canola oil if the meat has some fat of its own), and brown the ground beef until it's almost done. Drain the beef in a colander and set the beef aside but do not scape out the bits of meat that are left in the pan. Just leave the pan as it is, that will flavor the sauce.

Put in the olive oil in the skillet on medium low. Open the can of crushed tomatos and have it ready. When the oil is ready, put in the garlic. Stir it all the time so it will get golden, but not burnt brown. When the garlic is done, pour in the crushed tomatos. That's why I say have it ready -- I've burned the garlic while trying to get the can of tomatos open. Now add the salt, pepper, basil, and sugar (sugar was my grandma's secret ingredient in everything). Let that simmer about 5 minues, then add back in the meat and simmer another 5 minutes. That's all.

It's my personal goal to adopt a "very little meat" lifestyle and I'm glad this recipie works in that direction. I think a quarter-pound of meat to serve 4 is pretty good. I'm not against killing and eating animals, but I know that whenever I see an animal up close, like a cow or a chicken or a turkey, I don't want to kill it, I want to love it. And, I am absolutely against inhumane treatment of animals and the way animals are treated on industrial farms, based on what I've heard and read.

Once, after I saw pigs smushed into a transport truck, snout to rear in 100+degree heat, I tried and failed to be a vegetarian. My conclusion now is to simply follow the word of wisdom, noting here the meat "to be used sparingly" part no one seems to think too much about. I hope I can make small difference for the animals by adopting a low-meat lifestyle. As I understand it, the driver behind industrial meat production is volume. Lots of meat, for a cheap price. If we ate less it wouldn't matter so much if humane treatment resulted in less meat at a more expensive price. I've often wondered if the word of wisdom's admonition to eat less meat is also intended as much for the good of the animals as it is for the good of us.

Your thoughts? I hope you like the recepie.

Misty

It's a lovely rainy day here on bull run mountain, and I can't seem to get it together enough to do anything except look through my email and write notes to family and friends. Sometimes 3 times a day I drive up to our house from the road, and from there I just notice what a disaster our yard is. This year we are trying for grass on one side and wildflowers on the other (Update -- they're sprouting!). It'll be pretty if it works. Tonight I took the dogs for a walk, and we came home from up the mountain, through the woods. There was our fence, and the gate, but other than that, still woods. Then down the mountain and to my studio, and I was surprised to realize I was still in the same woods. It somehow seems different to come upon it with the experience of being in the woods immediatly proceeding my arrival rather than being in the house. Only when I got down to the house I felt like I was out of the woods, so to speak.

(I have a clearer image of bumblebee bottom but he's flying out of the frame in that one so I guess I like this one better).

Every year we've lived here, I've gone in and torn out everything growing on our birm -- the steep slope between our front "yard" and the road. Every year I'm shocked at what grows back. Gargantuan weeds, weeds 7 feet tall, weeds with trunks 2 inches indiameter, prickers a half-an-inch long...This year I'm so thrilled, the birm is just covered -- thick(!) -- with what I've learned is called dead nettle. Many people speak poorly of it but it's low growing, it's covered the birm very well, right now it has little purple flowers, and every afternoon it attracts bumblebees. I can go out there and sit and watch them work, and they have no interest in me at all. I've read that bumblebees are having a hard time with their habitat, so in addition to liking it for it's ground cover, I think it's important to leave it for them, too. Besides, we just planted a whole bag of wildflower seeds (50,000 seeds, probably spread a little thick...) so I don't see what's the difference.

These are another wildflower growing on the birm closer to our driveway. I guess they are violets. How lovely.

My printable foam finger party pack used to be just the 3 different sizes of foam fingers. Now it has the works. In order to upgrade the party pack, I upgraded myself (my mac...my self) to Adobe CS6 -- the kind that is a subscription and then you download the programs from the entire offering that you want to use. Well worth it, just to be able to work with all of the elements in this project at once. Beofre in CS3 everything here would have been a seperate file. I think it would have taken twice as long, and believe me, it took long enough.

When someone orders it, they can choose all their own wording and color scheme. It'll be much easier to make those edits with everything on the same screen in CS6, too.

This whole thing has been most popular for first birthday parties. I'm sure because there is already a #1 on there...cute. So, we'll see. (In my mind, every time someone buys something from my shop I see Ferris Bueller looking straight into the camera saying, "They bought it." It's a happy moment.)

I know these aren't perfect. There's an awfully great view of the clothes dryer in the one -- a more experienced photographer would have shut the laundry door -- and there's graininess because I put the ISO way up to compensate for the darkness. Other details are, the white balance was set to tungsten, and shutter speed was enough that I could hand-hold the camera. The aperture was pretty wide.

Later that night, I adjusted the levels just a bit in Photoshop, and auto-adjusted the color, which often works very well for me. I ran an action on the photo from the "Finish It" set from MCP Actions.
